If you’re finding yourself in need of staying in with your spouse, you might be in need of some good at home date night ideas. Although we’re kid-free, date night can still sometimes be a challenge between long work hours and caring for our two dogs. We often don’t have the energy for spending time to get dressed up, driving 20 or more minutes away, and going through the motions of the classic “dinner and a movie”. Sometimes, it’s just nice to have a date night at home.

1. Have a Game Night for a Date Night at Home
There’s no shortage of games that you could play together – from classic board games to console. We like to plan ahead and do some special shopping for date night snacks (you can pick up whatever your favorites are), pop open a bottle of wine, and maybe even make a bet… loser cleans the kitchen.

When we want to have a game night, we tend to choose console games that allow us to interact or challenge one another. Minecraft has been a lot of fun as a team building exercise, just as Mario Party offers more of a contest vibe. Whatever you choose, make sure your game night involves a game you both actually enjoy and allows some sort of interaction.
If console isn’t your jam, here’s some other ideas for stay at home date night games…
Two Player Couples Games:
- Couples Trivia (We love this for newlyweds!)
- How Do You See The World? (Excellent conversation starter!)
- Monogamy (Adult and Sexy)
Classic Board Games for Date Night:
2. Set Up an At Home Date Night Picnic
This one might involve a little planning ahead and adding some items to your next grocery list, but having a picnic is otherwise a fun and easy to achieve at home date idea. The promise is simple: Pick up some of your favorite picnic type foods (we’ve listed our favorites below) and set up a picnic wherever you’d like – In your backyard, living room floor, or even in bed.
To avoid making it feel like you’re just eating somewhere else in your house, go the extra mile and get a picnic blanket, or organize and transport your food in an adorable picnic basket for 2. We also loooove Bento Boxes because it’s easy to keep the food separated.

Date Night Picnic Food Ideas:
- Fancy Cheeses (This is a fun time to try new ones)
- Crackers (Sample packs are awesome!)
- Fruit (We adore chocolate fondue together)
- Sandwiches (Make one special for each other)
- Chilled Wine (Or room temperature – you do you)
Maybe use this as an opportunity to try a new recipe together. Since you’re staying home and not going far, you won’t have to worry about the food going bad or not doing well left out for long periods of time.
3. Have an At Home Wine Tasting
Somehow we made it into adulthood without being the wine connoisseurs we always thought we’d grow up to be. If that’s you, you’ll have fun classing it up with this indoor date night idea. It’s simple, and it doesn’t require much in the way of accessories. In fact, a few selections of wine (shops often carry samples, or smaller bottles so you aren’t left with whole bottles of wine you don’t even like) and some glasses are really all you need.
You might go all out and buy this kit with wine tasting instructions (we loved getting to know wines and what about them we enjoyed) or get some cheese and fruits to try with your wine. It can be as simple or elaborate as you want it to be, and it’s a fun go-to at home date idea because it’s always a different experience.

Check out this Virtual Wine Tasting where you can learn about wine online from an expert wine teacher. You bring the booze, and Caroline will show you everything you need to know. You’ll sip, swirl, and laugh together while learning all about wine!
4. Write a Love Letter During Your At Home Date Night
I adore getting little notes from my husband. If Words of Affirmation and Quality Time are part of your love languages, you’ll really enjoy making this part of your at home date. The notes don’t have to be super sappy – it’s all in writing a nice note to your spouse that makes them feel good, and adds a touch of romance to your night.
You can share your notes right away, or pick a time to read them later. Personally, we enjoy ending our date by reading our love notes. It really adds something extra and gives you the feel goods before you retire to the bedroom for the evening… if you know what I mean.

5. Start and Decorate a Memory Jar
Early in our marriage, I got an idea for a Memory Jar on Pinterest (if I’m recalling correctly). The premise is that you write down little love notes, or special happenings throughout the year and you designate a day you’ll open and read the notes together. Naturally, we’ve chosen May 4th to open ours since it’s our anniversary.
You can kick off your at home date night by starting a memory jar together. It can be as simple as you want it to be – a large, glass jar (make sure there’s some sort of top!) decorated however you’d like. Or, you can buy this already put together Memory Jar kit. We bought this exact one as a gift for Jeremy’s Mom and her now husband as part of their wedding gift. It even comes with a pen and little tickets for writing your notes.
6. Have an At Home Spa Date
This is one of my personal favorite date night at home ideas because it’s romantic and relaxing (and full of self care!). There’s so many ways you can make this type of date night a reality, so lean into it and try new things. Here’s some ideas to get you started…
Take a nice, hot shower. And hey, if you do it together, it’s all the more fun! We like starting off with a shower because it gets you all relaxed, clean, and in the mood to snuggle down for your spa night. We definitely recommend a nice exfoliating scrub (this Himalayan Salt Scrub is a personal favorite). Once you’re out of the shower, give each other a nice rub down with your favorite lotion or oils.

With all of your pores nice and open, it’s a great time for a face mask! This inexpensive mask set is perfect for at home date nights for couples because you can try different mask types together and find your favorite.
Don’t forget to give your feet some love! This foot peel mask is insane. It comes with two in the box, and you won’t believe how different your feet will look in a couple of weeks. It will make your feel peel and look disgusting, but at least you and your partner will be in it together!
6. Learn Your Love Languages
Your Love Language says a lot about how you “speak” and want to be “spoken to” by your partner. Understanding each other’s Love Languages can greatly improve your relationship… so why not start with your date nights at home?
You can either take the quiz for free here, or purchase the full book and spend time reading more in depth about the Love Languages together.
It’s so worth it to get to know one another’s Love Language and what it means to communicate while using the Love Language of your spouse. We’re lucky that ours is so similar, but yours may not be… and that’s okay! It takes practice to be able to “speak” to each other, and it starts by putting in the effort to understand one another.

7. Pick a Water Fight
Want an at home date night idea that will boost your adrenaline, get you outside, and let you get messy? While picking a fight isn’t usually something you’d find us recommending, we love playful fights that involve water.

Spend some quality time preparing some water balloons to throw at each other, or if you’d rather save some time and get right down to it, purchase some super soaker water guns and spray each other down in the back yard.
Either way, you’ll have fun peeling wet clothes off one another after!
8. Use the Time to Plan Ahead
You probably don’t get a lot of opportunities for a date night, so why not incorporate some time to plan ahead for future date nights, vacations, or some kid-free holiday plans? We really enjoy this special time together where we’re really focusing on one another and our needs as a couple, and you will too.
